It will focus on artificial intelligence research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Florida is poised to run the fastest artificial intelligence-rooted supercomputer in U.S. academia by early 2021 following millions in gifted funding provided by Nvidia, the two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nvidia.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/21\/university-of-florida-nvidia-ai-supercomputer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\"><p>\u201cCongratulations to the University of Florida and\u00a0NVIDIA\u00a0for their announcement today of a transformational partnership to create higher education\u2019s most powerful AI supercomputer and develop a workforce training program that will jumpstart the next generation of discovery and innovation. This initiative will empower students and arm them with new tools to succeed in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century economy. The University of Florida is a top-tier public research university, and I commend\u00a0NVIDIA\u00a0for using this opportunity to form this public-private partnership that will exponentially leverage the prior and current investments by the state and federal government in our research at institutions of higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>U.S. Senator for Florida\u00a0Marco Rubio\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The $70 million project will fund construction of an AI-centric supercomputing and data center and is intended to make UF one of the leading AI universities in the country, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ufl.edu\/\">UF<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/\">Nvidia<\/a>. As part of the partnership, they will boost the capabilities of the university\u2019s supercomputer, HiPerGator, with the recently announced Nvidia DGX SuperPOD architecture, designed for \u201crapid deployment and scaling of massive AI infrastructure,\u201d with the revamped system scheduled to be operational by early 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOver the coming years, tens of thousands of University of Florida graduates with this unique AI-oriented background will create their futures and ours, transforming our workforce and virtually every field and every industry here in Florida and around the world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span class=\"caps\">NVIDIA<\/span>\u00a0will also contribute its\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span>\u00a0expertise to\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UF<\/span>\u00a0through ongoing support and collaboration across the following initiatives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/deep-learning-ai\/education\/\">\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NVIDIA<\/span>\u00a0Deep Learning Institute<\/a>\u00a0will collaborate with\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UF<\/span>\u00a0on developing new curriculum and coursework for both students and the community, including programing tuned to address the needs of young adults and teens to encourage their interest in\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">STEM<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span>, better preparing them for future educational and employment opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"caps\">UF<\/span>\u00a0will become the site of the latest\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NVIDIA<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span>\u00a0Technology Center, where\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UF<\/span>\u00a0Graduate Fellows and\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NVIDIA<\/span>\u00a0employees will work together to advance\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"caps\">NVIDIA<\/span>\u00a0solution architects and product engineers will partner with\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UF<\/span>\u00a0on the installation, operation and optimization of the NVIDIA-based supercomputing resources on campus, including the latest\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">AI<\/span>\u00a0software applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The UF project is being funded through a $25 million donation from UF alumnus and Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky, along with $25 million in hardware, software, services and training from Nvidia. UF also pledged $20 million of its own money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m really hoping that this becomes a blueprint for public-private investment around the country,\u201d Malachowsky said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This gives the university the tools to apply AI across a multitude of areas to address major challenges such as rising seas, aging populations, data security, personalized medicine, urban transportation and food insecurity.
