Agreement Reached on European Vaccination Passport

The European Commission is in favor of the idea of a Covid-19 vaccination certificate “mutually recognised” by member countries, says Ursula von der Leyen in an interview with Portuguese media channels, ahead of her visit to Lisbon on Friday.

“It is a medical requirement to have a vaccination certificate. For this reason, I welcome the initiative of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to propose a mutually recognized vaccination certificate,” she said.

“The certificate gives priority or access to certain goods, it is a political and legal decision to be discussed at European level,” she added.

The 27 countries will hold a new summit next Thursday on coordination in the face of the health crisis.

The head of the Greek government has urged the European Union to adopt a “standardized” vaccination certificate to support the tourism industry, devastated by the corona-virus pandemic.

“It is urgent to develop a joint agreement on the creation of a vaccination certificate that will be accepted by all member countries, “Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote, stressing that”a standardized certificate will be proof that a person has been successfully vaccinated.”
