Lebanon is in grief after a massive explosion in the capital Beirut. The Beirut Blast killed approximately 75 people and injured more than 4000 other on Tuesday.

The whole city trembled when a fire at the Beirut port turned into a massive explosion.

The reason for the explosion is probably the storage of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate which had been perilously kept in a storeroom for more than 6 years, President Michel Aoun told the news.

The president has also declared a state of emergency for more than 14 days and also arranged an urgent cabinet meeting.

Lebanon will also observe a mourning period of three days from Wednesday.

Aoun has also announced an emergency fund worth 100 billion lira ($66 Million) to tackle the emergency situation in the country.

Head of Lebanon’s Red Cross, Gorge Kettani told the media that they were experiencing the biggest catastrophe in the history of the country, and the injured and the dead bodies were everywhere.

The government has started to investigate the real cause behind this massive explosion at Beirut. The possible reason is the storage of ammonium nitrate. Lebanon’s Supreme Defence Council said that the responsible person/authority will face huge fine and punishment.

The Beirut Blast happened at the worst time as the country is experiencing a Covid-19 crisis.

What Happened that led to the Beirut Blast?

The blast occurred in the evening and felt 240km away at the island of Cyprus. The people there thought that this was an earthquake. The explosion was so huge that it turned the port out of action immediately. The injured and survivors told the local media that there were pieces of broken things everywhere. One witness told that he was walking through the broken pieces of glass in the dark. The explosion turned into a mushroom of smoke and later into a complete disaster.
