Bangladesh is about to implement the death penalty against rape after widespread cases of sexual violence against women in the country.

As per the Law Minister Anisul Haq, the order will be issued by the high court on coming Tuesday making it a part of the law.

Last week’s video of a vicious gang assault of a 37-year-old woman went viral on Social media. Ever since the tragic incident, there has been widespread indignation and protests from the locals. More than 1000 rape cases have been reported in Bangladesh this year and one-fifth of them are gang rapes.

According to human rights advocates, the number of incidents is more than the number of reports. Women do not file a complaint against them as they fear stigmatization.

However, after last week’s incident, protesters are demanding immediate changes in laws for rape cases.

An investigation by Bangladesh’s National Human Rights Commission claims that the woman in the video who was brutally attacked in the southeastern district of Noakhalim has been raped multiple times. Eight suspects have been arrested after the video went viral.

Earlier this month a similar case was reported where a young girl was gang-raped in a hostel room gang-raped in the northern district of Sylhet. This also led to a lot of chaos in the administration and arrest warrants were issued for several members of the student wing.

The streets of Bangladesh have been flooded with protestors. Signs of “Hang the rapists” and “No mercy to rapists” were widely observed in these protests.

As a consequence, if these protests government has decided to bring change by passing the ordinance. This is because the government is not implementing a direct law.

The recent case caused a lot of agony from the locals that ultimately resulted in the government taking quick actions. Ever since the decision came out the majority of people applauded the decision. However, sometimes it might take more than just the death penalty to fight against sexual violence.
